Description

Father Coram is a tall, well-built man in his early thirties, with brown eyes and brown hair. Typically, he is dressed in a black floor-length cassock and gold necklace with a crucifix, with a long coat overall. He carries an ashwood staff, and a small pack with books, paper, and ink.

Background and Personality

Father Coram is of Welsh descent, born near London but raised on a sheepfarm in Wales. He grew to a love of learning and lore that stood him in good stead when he found his vocation and left his grandparents' farm to study first at Cambridge, then in Rome. A quiet, studious boy and man, his teachers gave him more and more complex and demanding work, until he was recognized as a solid Jesuit theologian and authority on myth and the occult. Of course, this only fueled the pride he felt in himself and his accomplishements - a pride that, while perhaps justified, exhibits itself by adding a touch of arrogance and condecension to the way he treats those he perceives to be less educated or less ambitious.

His expertise in myths and the occult is what brought him to the attention of the Inquisition, and at the age of 30 his superiors assigned him to the service of the Inquisitor-General, who set him to providing background evidence for the many trials initiated by the Inquisition. At first, Coram was proud of the service he could provide - until he slowly realized that far too many good men and women had been condemned on the strength of the obscure research he had done. No stranger to Church politics, still this realization burdened his soul - even more when he realized that there were servants of the Adversary in the very Order that was pledged to uproot them. Sick at heart, he brooded, and eventually walked out of his fine quarters and into the Spanish countryside. He worked his way to a port city, and then to the New World. There he found a group of people his inner senses told him could be trusted, and since then has followed his conscience to eliminate the real servants of the Adversary where and how he can.

Family

Father Coram hasn't seen his family in many years. His father left the family before he was born, and his mother died when he was small, leaving his Welsh grandmother raised him. It is from her that he has his love of lore and knowledge of herbalism; even as a toddler he followed her everywhere. His grandfather, a taciturn but kind man, was also a scholar and taught Coram how to read, passing on his love of books.

When wielding a weapon made primarily of ash wood, the weapon is considered blessed.

Once per day, you may inscribe a symbol in ash upon your brow to have one of the following effects:

• Mark of the Avenger: Any weapon you wield for the next scene is considered holy (see page 134).
• Mark of the Unassailable: For the next scene, you are under the effect of a heavenly shield spell (see page 133).
• Mark of Discernment: For the next scene, you see clearly in any lighting, and double successes on Notice rolls.
