The challenge phrase is to ask what time is it, adding that you have recently lost a favorite watch given to you by Uncle (name). The first letter of the Uncle's name is determined by the first letter (in English) of the name of the city in which you are currently in. For example: You are in Paris. The challenge would be" Pardon me do you have the Time? I am afraid I recently lost my favorite watch given to me by my Uncle Peter".
The response should be give the time but add that your watch is X minutes slow, with "X" being the number of the "current month". For example: It is June. " I have the time as 12:15, but I fear my watch is 6 minutes slow. I really must get it fixed."
Our concern is great enough that we feel it is also imperative that we change the recognition device for use in less dangerous circumstances. Instead of the display of the white rose, in these instances the symbol used should be that of a silver lightning bolt.
Some messages will include code phrases that will be used for that assignment only for verification and recognition. Please burn this letter after memorizing the new code phrases.

So what does all this mean? The White Rose uses security procedures to protect its field agents. Unfortunately during the later half of the 1895/2002-year several members of the White Rose were less than discrete. Low level events will now use a silver lightning bolt as its sole means of recognition of fellow members. Heroes in mid and high level events as well as any level events will see the use of various codes. Some will be code phrases buried in messages. Their contact(s) will expect the heroes to use the code phrase during the initial meeting to verify who the heroes are. Instructions may also be given for the heroes to carry a specific item as a means of identification for the contact to recognize the hero (or vice versa).
In other events, sign and countersigns may be used. The sign (or Challenge) will consist of a sentence with a unique code phrase, which will vary based on what city* the heroes (not the players) are currently in. The question should include statement about the lost of a watch given to the hero by an Uncle whose first name that begins with the first letter of the name of the city the heroes are in.. For example, in London your hero (or your contact) might ask, “Pardon me do you have the Time? I am afraid I recently lost my favorite watch given to me by my Uncle Lawrence" as a challenge to someone. The person to whom the question is addressed (possibly you) must respond within three sentences with the countersign (assuming it is April " I have the time as 2:12, but I fear my watch is 4 minutes slow. I really must see about getting it fixed soon."
The sign and countersign will change annually,
but this is the correct sign-countersign for game year 1896 (real
player year 2003).
* If not in a city, use state, country or ocean name.
A handout like this will accompany any tournament that uses the sign & countersign. It will include the current sign and countersign being used. In low-only events, the silver lightning bolt is perfectly acceptable as a sign.
